KPP Powers Commodities Inc, visits the ATI-ITCPH on February 4 to discuss a third trial on the use of an ASF vaccine in 2025.

KPP Powers is a Filipino firm that has acquired an exclusive distributorship of African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccines from Vietnam manufacturer AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company (AVAC).

In 2023, 50 growers were vaccinated (controlled vaccination) with AVAC to evaluate its safety and efficacy. The same trial was conducted in 2024 (mass vaccination) among 286 growers. All vaccinated pigs were dispersed as slaughter hogs categorized as oversized, except for one, which was successfully bred during one of the practical classes at ITCPH.

This demonstrated not only the vaccine’s efficacy in preventing infection but also its potential benefits in breeding programs. The detection of maternal antibodies in piglets suggests that AVAC vaccine may play a role in providing maternal-derived antibodies to the next generation, a finding that warrants further investigation.

With this, KPP Power’s CEO, Ms. Pinky Tobiano, together with their Technical Manager, Dr. Noel Bonita, Mr. Ian Caldoza, and Mr. Juancho Robles, discuss with the ITCPH Center Director, Dr. Ruth S. Miclat-Sonaco, the possibility of launching a third trial using AVAC vaccine to breeders (sows and gilts) this year 2025.
